Founder of BetOnSports Online Casino Arrested in Dominican Republic

Apr 02, 2007

The founder of online gambling firm BetOnSports was arrested last week in the Dominican Republic, and the U.S. attorney's office in St. Louis, Missouri plans to ask he be sent to St. Louis to face charges of racketeering, conspiracy and fraud, Reuters reported.

Gary Stephen Kaplan, the founder of BetOnSports -- which is based in Costa Rica and once traded on the London Stock Exchange -- was indicted last June by a federal jury in Missouri.

Last July, BetOnSports CEO David Carruthers was also arrested by U.S. authorities, while traveling in Texas. Following the arrest of Carruthers, in August BetOnSports closed its U.S.-facing business, which accounted for 95% of its profits.

Carruthers remains under house arrest in St. Louis, where U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway will prosecute a 22-count case against Carruthers, Kaplan and others involved with the company.
